Do you remember what your favorite birthday present was? In my case, it was one of those action figures from the ‘Masters of the Universe’ series of the 80s. I had been wanting one of those action figures for the longest time. I was about 7 years old and back then, children didn’t have that many options for a Christmas or birthday present.
Most of my friends had at least one of them. The stores did carry them but because the TV series had just started, they didn’t have that big of a selection. The minute a bunch of those hit the stores, they were bought quite fast. To top it all off, my birthday is in January, so most of the parents had left the store shelves with a depleted stock of them
That pretty much made me hate having a birthday in January after that. Well. I don’t know how they did it, but my parents managed to get one of the figures. I was ecstatic. I didn’t know how to thank them enough for it. I remember that I behaved extra well for a few months after that. When Christmas came, I asked for a couple of those action figures again.
I remember G.I. Joe was also big at the time, but not that many of my friends were into them, so I got my requested two action figures. The TV series was a big hit and very soon everyone in my neighborhood was into collecting them. The toy company even put out a new “Adult collector” series a few years later. For those of us who had played with these action figures, we got the chance to get a more detailed version of it.
After action figures, I became very big on dogs. I asked for a puppy on my birthday and got it. I spent many years with that dog. He was a Labrador and loved snow. I soon grew out of my taste for action figures, but I never stop licking animals, especially dogs. I would have a lot of dogs after then and getting a puppy always managed to make my day.
